This year’s High Times Cannabis Cup in LA (Actually San Bernadoobie) has come and gone. As usual a fine time was had by all. Attendance was at record numbers, so a whole lotta people had a great time!
While I spoke on the Edibles Panel, I was not an official judge this time around (I have, however, been an edibles judge for High Times twice in the past). Nonetheless, I did manage to sample all of the cannabis edibles entries. My findings were not completely in line with the official judge’s this year, for instance I flip flopped first and second place, and the judge’s 3rd place winner (Kushie Candies Strawberry Banana White Chocolate Bar) didn’t even make my list. But since this is my blog, here are my personal picks (in order) for this year’s best edible entries:
#1 Terra Bites Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans by Kiva Confections – Even though the High Times judges gave it 2nd place, this product was my #1 favorite by a mile! Beautifully packaged in a nice tin (you can use later to store other items), there is no taste of cannabis in these beans, yet they pack a powerful, peppy, energetic punch (maybe it’s the cannabis/caffeine combo?). Each bean contains just 5 mg THC, so it’s easy to eat just the right amount to get the effect you want. I rarely buy edibles as I make my own, but I would go out of my way to get these.
#2 Liquid Gold Mint Meltaways by G Pharma Labs – I believe cannabis and mint must share a terpene, as their flavors meld so well. This product, like the one above, had virtually no marijuana flavor. The High Times judges awarded this one the top honor. These mints would make an elegant gift, as they are beautifully crafted and packaged. The taste and texture is outstanding. This might have been my #1 pick had the dosage been stronger (25 mg THC per candy). For someone with a monster tolerance like me, I just have to eat too many at once, but if you consider yourself an “edibles lightweight” I highly recommend this product.
#3 Dark Chocolate Covered Cherry Gummy Bear by Sweetstone Candy – I loved the flavor combination of dark chocolate and cherry in these chewy gummy treats and while covering a gummy candy in chocolate may sound strange, it actually works. The cannabis flavor is barely discernible, just enough to let you know it is there but give it an hour or so and you’ll know!
#4 Cherry Cannabis Quencher by Venice Cookie Company – This drink is delicious, not cloyingly sweet with tangy cherry flavor and virtually no taste of cannabis. In fact, it tastes so good it would be easy to down the entire bottle, which may be too strong a dose (72 mg THC) for many, so watch out. A refreshing thirst quencher that might cause cottonmouth. Hmmmm.
#5 Trikom Treats Blueberry Lemon Loaf – True this cake needs a few more blueberries and lots more lemon flavor, which is probably why it didn’t place. That said, it’s still a pleasant tasting, moist, satisfying cake with barely discernible cannabis flavor that still packs a hefty medicinal punch (lost my label but if memory serves it was over 100 mg THC).
#6 Medspread Medicated Peanut Butter – Medicated peanut butter – genius! This spread comes in convenient little take along packets that make it easy to have a healthy medicated snack anytime, anywhere. This product had a wonderful taste with barely a there cannabis flavor, and smooth easy to spread consistency, and about 60mg THC per packet.
#7 Ma Gooch’s Gravity Lock Olive Oil – I love that more producers are providing the building blocks of cannabis cuisine to consumers. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of making your own infused oil, this is a great convenient alternative. Ma Gooch’s manages to pack 180 mg THC in their tiny bottle. On the downside it is a bit “green” on the flavor spectrum, but if you don’t mind the cannabis taste, this is a powerful product. Sprinkle on salads, sandwiches, veggies, or use as an ingredient in cooking.
